ROGER

On 19-20 November 2021, ROGER and CODHUS members, along with colleagues from the Department of Romanian Studies, participated in the 21st International Colloquium of the Department of Linguistics (organized by University of Bucharest), with the topic Current Trends in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. Mădălina Chitez, Roxana Rogobete, Dumitru Tucan and Ana-Maria Radu-Pop presented the paper called Reviewing the review: A corpus based study of appraisal in Romanian university student writing

Part of the Abstract:

This paper sets out to explore the academic written discourse characteristics of the appraisal framework (Martin and White, 2005) salient in a corpus of reviews collected from BA and MA students. The texts, representing student assignments in Romanian literature and linguistics courses, are included in the bilingual novice academic writing corpus ROGER (Chitez et al 2020), compiled at the West University of Timisoara, Romania. The research methodology, situated at the interface of corpus linguistics and pragmatics (Romero-Trillo, 2013), centres round corpus frequency counts and percentage values reflecting the appraisal framework subcategories coded in the ROGER selected subset: attitude, engagement, and graduation. Each of the three sub-categories includes linguistic features that can be operationalized with corpus analysis tools (e.g. authorial voice based on the use of first person pronouns / verbs) (cf. Suomela-Salmi & Dervin, 2009).
